Liberia and Sierra Leone are set to commence construction of a 255-kilometre transnational road corridor aimed at improving connectivity and strengthening bilateral trade. The project, which links key counties including Montserrado and major border points, features a 38-kilometre two-lane toll road and 217 kilometres of non-toll road, marking a significant step in regional infrastructure development.
Valued at $364 million, the project will be executed under a 25-year concession by Pavi Fort, which will finance 60% of the cost, while the Liberian government covers the remaining 40% through the National Road Fund and a $100 million guarantee. The initiative aligns with Liberia’s 2025–2029 development plan, which seeks to address infrastructure deficits, with over 88% of roads currently unpaved.
The corridor is expected to enhance market access and reduce transport costs, though concerns remain over affordability for low-income users, particularly on toll sections, which could affect inclusivity and usage.
