Illinois Launches Record $50.6 Billion Infrastructure Plan Covering All 102 Counties

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has unveiled a record-setting six-year, $50.6 billion infrastructure plan to upgrade the state’s roads, bridges, railways, airports, and transit systems. The plan allocates $32.5 billion for road and bridge improvements—$25.7 billion for state routes and $6.8 billion for local networks—covering 7,107 miles of roads and 8.4 million square feet of bridges.

Funded through the state’s “Rebuild Illinois” program, the plan leverages $15.8 billion in federal funds, $1.6 billion in bonds, $1.3 billion in local reimbursements, and $13.8 billion in state contributions. The program is sustained by the state’s Motor Fuel Tax, now pegged to inflation, and increased vehicle registration fees.

The multimodal component will receive $18.1 billion; $13.8 billion for 90 transit projects, $2.9 billion for rail, $1.2 billion for aviation, and $197 million for marine infrastructure. Key projects include $388 million for the Chicago–Quad Cities passenger rail link and $175 million for the Chicago Transit Authority’s new training and control center. Governor Pritzker hailed the plan as “the largest modernization effort in Illinois history.”
