FG to Deploy 90,000km Fibre Optic Broadband, Pushes Digital Economy Bill

Nigeria is set for a major digital leap as the federal government, under President Bola Tinubu, has concluded plans to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic broadband nationwide. The initiative aims to transform connectivity, boost GDP growth, and accelerate digital inclusion.

Speaking at the 2025 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ogun State, Senate Committee Chairman on ICT and Cyber Security, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, said the project will extend broadband access to every ward in Nigeria. He noted that a 10% increase in fibre penetration typically adds 2% to GDP growth.

To complement the infrastructure rollout, the National Assembly is finalising the National Digital Economy and E-Government Bill, which will modernise outdated laws and embed electronic transactions in Nigeria’s legal system.

Salisu highlighted Nigeria’s globally recognised National AI Strategy and stressed the role of private sector investment. He urged journalists to embrace AI responsibly, warning against quackery while calling for updated training, standards, and self-regulation in the profession. The broadband initiative is expected to revolutionise digital services, spur innovation, and unlock the sector’s full economic potential.
