Nigeria Secures $791m to Accelerate CNG Transition Nationwide

Nigeria is making bold strides toward cleaner, cheaper transport with over $791 million in private sector investments secured between May and June 2025. This marks a major milestone in the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), which has now mobilised more than $980 million in just one year to drive the adoption of CNG as a petrol alternative.

The initiative has already deployed over 100,000 CNG kits, converted 1,440 vehicles, and delivered 5,213 tricycles and 391 CNG-powered buses across 20 states. Infrastructural rollout includes 65 operational refuelling stations, 300 new conversion centres, and 175 daughter stations, 30 of which are now active. Additionally, 5,500 technicians have been trained, and over five consumer support schemes have been introduced.

By 2027, the target is to convert one million vehicles, set up 1,000 conversion workshops, and train 25,000 autogas professionals. The goal: to reduce Nigeria’s fuel costs, cut emissions by 57%, create over 300,000 jobs, and tap into the country’s vast gas reserves for energy security and economic resilience.
