Nigeria–Morocco $25bn Gas Pipeline Moves Toward Agreement

Nigeria and Morocco are set to sign a long-awaited intergovernmental agreement this year to advance the $25 billion African Atlantic Gas Pipeline project. The 6,900-kilometre infrastructure will transport natural gas from Nigeria across West Africa to Morocco and onward to Europe, marking a major step toward regional energy integration and global market positioning.

The project, involving 13 countries, has progressed through feasibility and engineering stages, with a phased development model designed to deliver early economic benefits. A joint project company between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and Morocco’s ONHYM will oversee execution, financing, and construction. The pipeline is expected to have an annual capacity of 30 billion cubic metres, supporting domestic use and exports.

Once operational, with initial gas expected by 2031, the pipeline is projected to boost electricity generation, industrial development, and regional trade. It also aligns with Europe’s push to diversify energy sources, positioning West Africa as a key player in the global gas market.
