Tunisia Expands Renewable Energy with New Solar Power Plants

Tunisia has commissioned four photovoltaic solar power stations in the Medenine governorate, each with a capacity of 2 MW, marking a step forward in the country’s clean energy transition. The projects, developed at a total cost of $5.5 million, are part of broader efforts to diversify the national energy mix and strengthen energy security in the south-eastern region.

The new installations are expected to deliver significant economic benefits, including annual savings of about $518,000 in electricity generation costs and a reduction of approximately $1.5 million in natural gas imports. Beyond cost efficiency, the projects aim to stabilise energy supply, support regional development, and enhance the resilience of Tunisia’s electricity infrastructure.

This initiative aligns with Tunisia’s national energy strategy, which targets increasing renewable energy’s share of electricity generation to 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2035. The rollout also contributes to grid modernisation and reinforces the country’s response to climate and energy transition challenges.
