Nigeria Expands 2026 Budget with N487bn Transport Push

The Federal Government has introduced additional infrastructure projects worth about ₦487.56 billion into the revised 2026 budget, signalling a stronger commitment to expanding Nigeria’s transport network. The newly included projects, which were absent from the original proposal, focus largely on urban rail systems and key transport corridors, reflecting a strategic shift toward improving mass transit and connectivity across major economic centres.

Key allocations include ₦170 billion for the Lagos Green Line, alongside ₦125 billion for Kaduna Light Rail, ₦120 billion for Kano Light Rail, and ₦50 billion for Ogun State Light Rail. The government has also earmarked funds for feasibility studies across multiple corridors, including Enugu, Maiduguri, and the Calabar–Maiduguri route, indicating long-term plans to link northern and southern economic zones.

Beyond transport, the revised budget reflects broader fiscal expansion, with significant allocations to agriculture, infrastructure, and healthcare, as well as ₦3.5 trillion set aside for legacy debt settlement. Overall, the adjustments underscore an aggressive infrastructure-led growth strategy aimed at improving mobility, stimulating economic activity, and addressing longstanding development gaps.
