Vodacom Invests $28m to Upgrade M-Pesa Platform in Tanzania

Vodacom Tanzania has invested $28 million to modernise its M-Pesa platform, transitioning from its legacy G2 system to a next-generation financial technology infrastructure. The upgrade is designed to enhance reliability, security, and scalability, ensuring the platform can support growing demand and future innovation in mobile financial services.

The new system significantly reduces service disruptions, cutting downtime from hours to minutes during maintenance, while introducing stronger security features to protect customer data and transactions. It also improves transaction capacity and reporting capabilities for agents, merchants, and enterprise users, enabling more efficient service delivery and faster rollout of new features.

To ensure a seamless transition, Vodacom has implemented a 30-day “HyperCare” support phase to address any operational issues. The upgrade builds on recent innovations, including a tap-to-pay feature introduced through partnerships with global payment providers, positioning M-Pesa for sustained growth in digital finance.
