TCN Expands Grid Capacity Through $1.3 Billion Multilateral-Funded Transmission Projects

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed that over $1.3 billion worth of transmission infrastructure projects are currently underway across Nigeria with support from multilateral development partners. The investments are aimed at expanding national grid capacity, reinforcing weak transmission corridors, and modernising critical power infrastructure. Given the capital-intensive nature of transmission development, the company relies significantly on concessional financing backed by the federal government and implemented through dedicated project units.

Major development partners are supporting the projects. The World Bank is financing the $486 million Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project, while the Agence Française de Développement supports the Abuja Transmission Project and Northern Corridor Project valued at $370 million combined. The African Development Bank is funding the $210 million Nigeria Transmission Expansion Project, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency is financing the $235 million Lagos Ogun Power Transmission Project.

Alongside grid expansion, TCN is upgrading its digital infrastructure. The company is implementing an Enterprise Resource Planning system, deploying regional data centres, and establishing disaster recovery facilities to strengthen operational resilience. Network integration, surveillance systems, and improved connectivity across regional offices are also being introduced to enhance efficiency and protect critical infrastructure.
