The Federal Government has approved the construction of a 420-kilometre dual carriageway connecting Akwanga in Nasarawa State through Plateau and Bauchi States to Gombe State. The approval, announced by the Federal Ministry of Works, positions the project as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s legacy road programme aimed at using infrastructure to drive economic growth across the country.
The new corridor forms the fourth leg of the administration’s flagship highway initiatives, alongside the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway and the Calabar–Ebonyi–Abuja route. Designed to interconnect Nigeria’s regions, the road will feature modern elements including solar powered street lighting and renewable energy components. Officials say it will enhance trade flows, agricultural distribution and regional integration.
Along the Bauchi–Gombe axis, rehabilitation works covering 35.4 kilometres are already underway, with over 21 kilometres completed. Authorities report reduced accidents and travel time, while emergency drainage and flood control projects across Bauchi State are strengthening climate resilience and road safety.
