Federal Government Allocates N102.3bn Counterpart Funding for Lagos Green Line in 2026 Budget

The Federal Government has proposed N102.3 billion as counterpart funding for the Lagos Green Line rail project in the 2026 budget, according to the Appropriation Bill under the Ministry of Transportation. The allocation is designated for Phase One of the project and follows a N146.14 billion counterpart funding provision in the 2025 budget, signalling sustained federal involvement.

The funds will be transferred to the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, which manages federal equity participation and structured financing for major infrastructure. This arrangement points to continued collaboration between the Federal Government, Lagos State, and other financiers. Beyond the Green Line, the 2026 budget earmarks N68.5 billion for consultancy services on the Lekki–Ijebu Ode–Ore–Kajola railway and the coastal rail corridor, alongside N29.04 billion for railway modernisation, rolling stock, signalling, and security systems.

The Lagos Green Line is a proposed $3 billion rail network linking Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone. While construction has not yet commenced, the project remains central to Lagos’ long-term urban mobility strategy, despite expert concerns around station spacing and ridership optimisation.
