Nigeria Approves VHF Radio System Upgrades to Boost Air Safety

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the upgrade of remote-controlled Very High Frequency (VHF) radio systems at key airports, including Lagos, Abuja, and several others, to enhance communication reliability and air safety. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, announced the approval after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Wednesday.

The VHF radio system upgrades are part of a broader initiative to modernise Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure. The enhanced systems will be implemented at nine airports, including Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ilorin, Abuja, Kano, Maiduguri, Sokoto, Wukari, and an additional site in Abuja. These upgrades are aimed at ensuring clearer communication between pilots and air traffic controllers during critical phases of flight, such as takeoff and landing.

Additionally, the FEC approved the installation of an aeronautical frequency monitoring and interference detection system to further improve communication integrity. The council also approved the installation of advanced surface movement guidance systems and biometric-enabled e-gates at all international airports to streamline passenger processing. These upgrades are part of a larger effort to enhance Nigeria’s airport infrastructure and improve air travel safety and efficiency.
