On 10 December 2025, the Board of Directors of the African Development Fund approved a €70.34 million loan to Burkina Faso to finance the Transport Sector Support Project in Abidjan. This funding, sourced from the African Development Bank Group’s concessional window, aims to enhance the country’s connectivity and strengthen sub-regional integration, benefiting the resilience of the population. It complements financing from multilateral institutions such as the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, with additional contributions from the Burkina Faso government.
The loan will specifically finance machinery and equipment for the establishment of five emergency road maintenance teams in the Ouahigouya, Ziniaré, Kaya, Dori, and Fada N’Gourma regions. It will also cover road maintenance during the project implementation phase, which is expected to run until 2030. The project will focus on rehabilitating and constructing essential infrastructure, including offices, garages, and workshops, to ensure the efficient functioning of the road networks.
This initiative aims to improve internal connectivity, preserve Burkina Faso’s road infrastructure, and bolster the resilience of its population, particularly in regions with significant agropastoral potential and rich cultural diversity. The project aligns with the African Development Bank Group’s efforts to promote peace, development, and regional connectivity, while also supporting the structural transformation of the economy and improving access to basic services and markets for vulnerable communities.
