UAE Launches USD 1bn Renewable-Energy Push in Yemen

The United Arab Emirates has unveiled a USD 1 billion renewable-energy package for Yemen to accelerate the country’s power-sector recovery. The programme will be executed by Global South Utilities, an Abu Dhabi-based firm selected to oversee project delivery and long-term operations. The investment follows earlier UAE-backed solar initiatives aimed at stabilising electricity access in conflict-affected areas.

Under the plan, Global South Utilities will develop a mix of solar and wind projects while upgrading Yemen’s power-distribution network. The company noted that the initiative builds on recent gains made after the first utility-scale solar plant came online. Yemen’s system has struggled for decades due to fuel shortages and war-related infrastructure destruction, leaving millions without reliable electricity.

The USD 1 billion package is expected to expand generation capacity, raise the share of renewables, and support the second phase of the Aden solar project scheduled for 2026. Officials say the programme will help power economic activity, strengthen market resilience, and advance Yemen’s broader recovery agenda.
