Tunisia plans to invest about $1 billion to expand Tunis-Carthage International Airport as part of efforts to modernise its aviation infrastructure and meet growing passenger demand. According to Tunisia Ministry of Transport, the project aims to increase the airport’s passenger capacity from about 5 million to 18.5 million annually by 2031.
The expansion has been included in the 2026 investment budget of the Office of Civil Aviation and Airports, the government agency responsible for managing Tunisia’s aviation facilities.
The government had earlier considered building a new airport but later decided to upgrade the existing facility instead. The decision comes amid rising air travel demand across Africa. Data from the International Air Transport Association shows that African airlines recorded the fastest global growth in international travel demand in January 2026, with passenger traffic rising by 11.7 percent year on year.
