Tinubu Expands Clean Mobility Programme to Include Electric Vehicles

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of Nigeria’s clean transport programme, renaming it the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV). The broadened mandate positions the initiative to coordinate a nationwide transition toward both gas-powered and electric mobility, reinforcing the government’s commitment to affordable and environmentally sustainable transportation.

Under the new framework, the initiative will continue scaling CNG infrastructure, including refuelling stations, vehicle conversion programmes, and integrated systems, while also driving the rollout of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. Gas remains central to the strategy, leveraging Nigeria’s abundant reserves to reduce fuel costs, enhance energy security, and conserve foreign exchange, while EV adoption supports long-term sustainability goals.

To accelerate implementation, the President has directed the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits and mobile refuelling units, alongside partnerships with financial institutions to provide accessible financing. The reforms aim to expand adoption, reduce cost barriers, and fast-track Nigeria’s transition to cleaner mobility.
