South Korea has developed the EMU-370, a next-generation high-speed train capable of operating at 370 kilometers per hour (kph), making it the world’s second-fastest in terms of operating speed. The train, with a maximum designed speed of 407 kph, was developed under a national research and development (R&D) program. The government plans to begin manufacturing the first vehicles next year, with test operations scheduled for 2030 and commercialization expected after 2031.
When commercialized, the EMU-370 will rank second globally in commercial speed, just behind China’s CR450, which is currently undergoing test operations at 400 kph. China plans to launch the CR450 commercially in 2027. High-speed trains in major countries like France, Germany, and Japan currently operate at speeds around 320 kph, highlighting the significant leap the EMU-370 represents.
The project, which ran from April 2022 to December 2025, was led by the Korea Railroad Research Institute, with participation from seven public and private organizations. A total investment of 22.5 billion won ($15.23 million) was made, including funding from both the government and the private sector.
