Nigeria Targets $500m Education Boost Amid Reform Push

Nigeria’s federal government has intensified efforts to overhaul the education sector, targeting an additional $500 million from a proposed $11.5 billion global education fund. Speaking at a high-level meeting in Lagos, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa described education as the most strategic investment for national growth, highlighting strong returns in productivity and earnings.

The government reported notable progress, including the reintegration of over 1.1 million out-of-school children within two years. However, challenges persist, with about 15 million children still out of school and a sharp drop in enrolment from primary to junior secondary levels due to infrastructure gaps. Authorities also flagged widespread learning poverty, with many children unable to read age-appropriate texts.

To address these issues, the government has earmarked N100 billion for student hostels and is investing in STEM and technical education. Reforms have unlocked over N140 billion in basic education funding, alongside a new digital tracking system for students. Officials emphasised that sustained progress will depend on stronger private sector partnerships and innovative financing.
