Nigeria is accelerating its clean energy transformation, with four states signing solar mini-grid agreements worth $400 million under a national $3 billion renewable energy program. The initiative, launched at the Nigerian Renewable Energy Innovation Forum (NREIF) in Abuja, aims to position Nigeria as Africa’s renewable manufacturing hub. President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima led the forum, joined by major local and international stakeholders.
Backed by the Federal Government, Germany, and the EU, the program will support over 4 GW of new solar projects, local assembly plants, and recycling facilities. Key players include Renew Power, Oando Clean Energy, Tranos, Auxano Solar, and IRS Green Energy. Oando Clean Energy is leading a 1,200 MW solar assembly facility with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
The agreements are expected to expand electricity access, reduce solar imports, and create thousands of green jobs. With the Electricity Act 2023 and new subsidy frameworks, Nigeria targets local value creation, improved energy reliability, and a $410 billion energy transition opportunity by 2060.
