Nigeria Moves to Stabilise Power Grid with Battery Storage Rollout

In a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s electricity grid, the Federal Government has launched plans to deploy battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support the country’s growing use of solar and wind power. The initiative, backed by a $1.2 million grant from the African Development Bank, aims to integrate 4,200MWp of solar power into the grid by 2030.

At a recent workshop in Abuja, Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu stressed the urgent need to tackle power instability and the challenges of managing renewable energy. He explained that BESS will help stabilise grid frequency, reduce blackouts, and serve as a backup during voltage drops or outages.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria added that battery systems will allow for better control of power quality and help operators manage peak load pressures. With over 90 million Nigerians still without access to electricity, officials say the project will bring clean power to off-grid communities and boost overall system reliability—paving the way for a more resilient and inclusive energy future.
