Niger State, IsDB Plan $163m Solar Power Project

The Niger State Government has announced plans to partner with the Islamic Development Bank to develop a $163 million solar electrification project aimed at expanding power supply and supporting agriculture and industry across the state. The project will involve the construction of a 100-megawatt solar power plant on about 200 hectares of land in north-central Nigeria.

Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago said the initiative would complement the state’s agricultural investments by providing reliable electricity for food production, agro-processing, and industrial activities. He noted that improved power access would help boost productivity, attract investment, and strengthen internally generated revenue. Officials described the project as a strategic link between energy infrastructure and the state’s broader economic development agenda.

Daniyar Abylkhan, who leads the Islamic Development Bank’s task team, said the project would harness Niger State’s abundant sunlight to deepen clean energy generation and reinforce the bank’s long-standing development partnership with the state. Project preparation has begun, including technical, environmental, and social assessments, though no operational timeline has been disclosed.
