FG Details N712bn Overhaul of Lagos International Airport

The Federal Government has revealed fresh details about the N712.26 billion upgrade of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The major facelift will focus on rebuilding Terminal One, expanding aircraft parking space, and easing passenger access with a new bridge and dedicated roads.

In a statement shared on Sunday, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said the project will fully rebuild the aging Terminal One—home to Wings D and E—which has suffered decades of neglect since it was commissioned in 1979. The terminal will be stripped down to its frame and redesigned to meet modern international standards.

The plan also includes expanding the newer Terminal Two, constructing two ring roads for smoother traffic flow, and building a bridge that connects directly to the upper departure floor. The upgrades will be financed through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund—sourced from fuel subsidy savings—with no external borrowing.

Keyamo stressed the importance of the revamp, noting that Lagos handles more passengers than other new terminals in Abuja, Kano, or Port Harcourt. Construction is expected to take 22 months.
