The European Union has approved more than €600 million in grants to boost zero-emission mobility infrastructure across 24 member states under the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF). Of this, €51 million is earmarked for hydrogen and maritime decarbonisation. The support covers 70 projects aligned with the trans-European transport network (TEN-T), reinforcing the EU’s clean-transport targets.
Funds from AFIF, managed by the Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), will enable the rollout of 38 hydrogen refuelling stations, green-fuel infrastructure across 24 ports, and over 3,500 electric charging points, including high-power chargers for trucks and fast chargers for light vehicles. Airports in 16 locations will also receive electrification upgrades.
The investment is expected to accelerate the EU’s transport decarbonisation goals, reduce clean-fuel infrastructure gaps, and strengthen hydrogen, maritime, and electric mobility networks. CINEA announced that AFIF has now allocated over €2.5 billion since 2021, with new calls expected following programme revisions.
