Engineers India Limited has been appointed to lead the expansion of the Dangote refinery, a move that will lift capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. The Indian engineering firm confirmed it has signed a contract valued at over 350 million dollars with the Dangote Group to act as Project Management Consultant and Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management Consultant for the project.
The expansion, known as Train 2, will significantly scale both refining and petrochemical output. Refining capacity will more than double, while polypropylene production is set to rise from 830 kilotonnes per annum to 2.4 million metric tonnes. This will be achieved through upgrades to existing units, installation of a new polypropylene unit, and the addition of a large-scale Oleflex unit to boost propylene supply.
Once completed, the project is expected to make Dangote the largest petroleum refinery in the world. It will strengthen Nigeria’s position as a regional hub for refined fuels and petrochemicals, reduce dependence on imports, and reinforce energy security across Africa.
