Dangote Group Unveils Major Expansion Plans for Fertiliser Operations

Dangote Group has announced new technical partnerships to accelerate a sweeping expansion of its fertiliser operations in Nigeria and support the development of a multibillion-dollar fertiliser plant in Ethiopia. The company said the agreements will enable Nigeria’s urea output to rise from three million to nine million metric tonnes annually, positioning the country as a leading fertiliser supplier across Africa and global markets.

The expansion will add four new production trains to the existing two-train complex in Lagos. Beyond Nigeria, Dangote has commenced work on a USD 2.5 billion fertiliser plant in Gode, Ethiopia, designed to deliver an additional three million metric tonnes of urea annually. Financing details were not disclosed, but the partnerships include Topsoe, Saipem, Thyssenkrupp/UFT, and Engineers India Limited, who will provide technology licensing, engineering design, and project management.

The group expects the expansion to boost agricultural productivity, strengthen food security, create jobs, and deepen Africa’s participation in global fertiliser supply chains. Nigeria is now on track to become one of the world’s major urea producers, supporting regional markets and reducing reliance on imports.
