The governments of Canada and Manitoba are jointly providing $76.9 million to enhance water and wastewater infrastructure in fast-growing communities. The initiative targets rural and regional systems that form the backbone of housing expansion, community development, and long-term affordability. Local leaders, including the Red-Seine-Rat Wastewater Co-operative, the Pembina Valley Water Co-operative, and the City of Brandon, have welcomed the support, noting that reliable water and wastewater services are essential for municipal growth and economic stability.
The funding, delivered through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, allocates major investments such as $22 million each for the RSR East network, RSR West network, and the Pembina Valley Water Co-op’s capital plan, alongside targeted upgrades in Boissevain and Morden. These investments are expected to increase housing capacity, improve access to clean drinking water, strengthen environmental protection, and boost regional resilience. The upgrades position municipalities to meet rising population demands and support sustained economic and residential growth.
