BUA Cement Eyes Capacity Expansion to 20mtpa

BUA Cement is considering a new capacity expansion following discussions between its chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, and CBMI Construction Ltd of China’s SINOMA Group. The proposal involves adding a 3 million tonne production line at the company’s Sokoto plant, which would raise total installed capacity from about 17 million tonnes to roughly 20 million tonnes per annum. While no investment value or construction timeline has been disclosed, the talks build on a long-standing partnership that has already delivered significant capacity across BUA’s operations.

The planned expansion would strengthen BUA Cement’s presence in northern Nigeria, a region benefiting from rapid population growth, urbanisation, housing demand, and cross-border trade. Nigeria remains Africa’s largest cement market, supported by persistent infrastructure needs and private real estate development, even as producers navigate currency volatility and rising energy costs.

From a competitive standpoint, the expansion would reinforce BUA’s position as Nigeria’s second-largest cement producer. Although Dangote Cement maintains a substantial capacity lead, the move would enhance BUA’s regional competitiveness and support long-term growth in an increasingly scale-driven market.
