Airtel Africa has announced a groundbreaking partnership with SpaceX to introduce Starlink Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity across its 14 African markets, including Nigeria. The service, set to begin in 2026, will enable Airtel’s customers with compatible smartphones to connect directly to Starlink satellites, bypassing the need for traditional mobile coverage.
This collaboration is poised to expand mobile network access in underserved and remote regions, benefiting Airtel’s 174 million customers across the continent. The Direct-to-Cell service will initially support text messaging and data services for select applications. The partnership also includes Starlink’s first broadband Direct-to-Cell system, leveraging next-generation satellites designed for enhanced performance. Airtel Africa’s upgraded system is expected to offer up to 20 times faster data speeds compared to earlier satellite solutions.
Airtel Africa becomes the first African operator to deploy Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell service, powered by a constellation of 650 satellites. This initiative will help deliver mobile connectivity in areas traditionally underserved by mobile networks. Airtel plans to further collaborate with SpaceX to promote digital inclusion across Africa, enhancing service availability, especially in rural and remote communities.
