Dangote Refinery Expansion to Make Nigeria a Global Refining Powerhouse

The Dangote Refinery has unveiled plans to expand its capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, positioning it as the largest refinery in the world, surpassing India’s Jamnagar facility.

Announcing the development at a press conference in Lagos, Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, said the expansion reflects the company’s confidence in Nigeria’s economic potential and Africa’s capacity to shape its energy future. He commended the Federal Government for supportive policies such as the Nigeria First Policy, Naira-for-Crude Policy, and the One-Stop Shop Initiative, which have boosted private participation in refining.

The project will create 65,000 jobs during construction and expand production of polypropylene, base oils, and linear alkylbenzene to strengthen Nigeria’s manufacturing base. Dangote assured that the refinery is prepared to maintain steady fuel supply through the festive season.

This expansion marks a transformational leap for Nigeria’s energy and industrial landscape—reducing fuel imports, stabilizing the naira, and positioning the country as a regional refining and petrochemical hub.
